Here at Varial we’re serious about science. We believe there’s a lot more to a magic board than magic. Here we show a clip from a rigorous testing program we just completed to determine the exact differences in strength and flex with different constructions. There’s a lot of data to crunch, so we’ll make additional posts in the future. Today we’re looking at the performance difference of a Varial Foam core versus a Polyurethane Foam core – both glassed with the same standard [2x 4oz deck, 1x oz bottom] E glass and polyester resin.
When we run tests we try to eliminate 100% of the variables we are not studying. For these panels, we used 100% foam cores (no stringers), precision-machined 0.5” +/- 0.005” flat foam core panels, our Infused Glass process with polyester resin to ensure maximum laminate uniformity, and precision machined core perimeters. We did all the machining on our AKUshaper CNC machine for which we designed and custom built a flat vacuum table attachment. This testing fixture precisely measures both load and deflection many times per second.
See the testing and results for yourself. Varial Foam generates 42% more strength from fiberglass than polyurethane foam. That is a huge difference that we’re proud of. We’re keeping more boards in your quiver with the same liveliness and flex as they had on Day 1. These boards aren’t going to the landfill, so that’s a big win for the environment – especially with our closed-mold Infused Glass process that releases <1% of the styrene VOCs produced by polyester wet lamination.
